The transparent sea is never too far away, bordering the long stiletto heel with white sandy beaches and rocky coves. The hillsides sweep down in a glorious green spectrum creating a cloak of olive groves and vineyards dotted with wild sage and rosemary. The land itself is only 30 kilometres wide making it easy to explore both coastlines of the Ionian and the Adriatic Oceans.

Almost in essence of the mystery surrounding much of Italy’s history, the trick here is to search out the best beaches to suit your own needs. Puglia is yet to be spoilt by beach tourism and hides its’ treasures very well. So don’t be put off by the coastal road looking like there is nothing to discover.

The bigger beaches are easiest to find, dotted along both coastlines, but dig a little deeper along the coastal road and you will discover many little secluded coves and beaches just perfect to whyle the hours away.

One such find to date, is a quaint little beach near Monopoli, as you head out on the coast road towards Fasano. They hire sun-beds and umbrellas for a few euros, on a raised man-made sand platform overlooking the sea. Or you can drop your towel on the clean sand below and head into the warm waters of the Adriatic. It boasts a small café/bar where you can get various refreshments including; panini, cold beer, coffee and ice-cream. You can hire kayaks from the ‘cave/come shed’ and as with most places it has toilets and an outside shower to freshen up before you drive home.

Easiest to find are the long private beaches, offering water sports, bars and restaurants. Capitolo, near Monopoli is one of these, where locals come in the summer months to dine and dance at the various bars and restaurants of an evening. Torre Canne is another, with soft sand and a gentle shallow sea.

Other Adriatic recommendations include the beaches of Ostuni, Saveleteri, Pilone and Rosa Maria.

According to our guests, the Ionian coastline (easily noted for the city of Taranto) is absolutely amazing and it is here you can discover the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean.

Try any of these beaches and discover some for yourselves. Email pictures and details or leave them in the book we have for our guests recommendations on places to visit, perfect restaurants and other weird and wonderful finds…
